I know this forum is about gaining US citizenship. However, giving up US citizenship is going to be costly starting Sep 12.

See article below.

The fee for individuals to renounce U.S. citizenship is jumping to $2,350 as of Sept. 12—more than five times the current charge of $450.
The U.S. State Department, in its explanation for the increase, said that documenting a renunciation is “extremely costly” and requires a minimum of two intensive interviews with the applicant as well as other procedures.
According to a State Department spokesman, the wait time for an expatriation interview has increased to as much as six months in some areas, while it is as short as two to four weeks in others.

Why not increase the N-400 fees instead?

There are millions of illegals waiting for US citizenship

Undocumented immigrants or "illegals" cannot file an N400.

You have to have a green card to file an N400.

I know that.

It is ridiculous to pay so much to renounce US citizenship but give fee waiver for N-400.

Ok now you changed subject from illegals to fee waiver which are totally different.

Have you read the fee waiver requirements ? Guess not.

I won't be suprised if US makes it difficult to renunciate citzenship going forward.

It looks like USCIS found a way to get some extra money out of US Citizens instead of relying on Permanent Residents!

Sounds like an "exit fee".

IMHO, US has set the US citizenship requirements bar too low.
