Hey everyone,

August 8, I applied for my Social Security Number. I got married on the 23rd, and now, over 3 weeks have passed, I still don't have my Social Security card with me. I called the SSA office to ask about my application only to find out that it did not go through. When I filed for a Social Security Number, I was still single but now I'm married, I'll be applying under my new married name - of course providing them with my certified copy of my marriage certificate.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the guy from the Social Security office said that I need to have my green card before I can apply for a Social Security Number. Of course I do know that none of that is true. In their website, it's stated there that I can apply for a SSN if I provide my I-94 (I printed the document to show them when I go there).

Eh. I'm just ranting over this. Has anyone experienced the same thing?

Ok, now to my question : )

I am now filling-out the AOS forms. In Illinois, I believe (of course I did my research) you can change your name after getting married and use the name of the husband. I want to use my husband's last name in my name in filling-out the forms, should I also include in the AOS packet our certified copy of our marriage certificate proving that we are married?

Has anyone did the same thing? Did you encounter any problems? I just don't want the USCIS confused on my paperwork.

Thanks everyone!

*****I attached the SSN Form and a pamphlet from the SSA website mentioning that an unexpired I-94 is all we need to show to have our SSN*****

ssn - only apply in visa name, the first time, so the SSA goons can find you in the SAVE database. you made a mistake, applying in married name - they not even attempt DHS verification. Go back on Thursday to the SSA office, try again. I hope you still have 2 weeks (or more) left on your I-94 duration, else they will laugh at you and call you silly names and ask you to leave the office.

AOS - you've described a normal situation, but only send photocopy of marriage cert. photocopy !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Ya the guy at SSA is an idiot... ask for a supervisor. May help so SHOW HIM the SS-5 instructions, a little OTJ never hurts. ;) There was another recently that was told the same thing, apparently SSA has a hired a new crop of idiots.

For sure use your married name for everything now that you are married.
