Airline travel and flu season in the Philippines... Murphy's law..96 hrs to POE

My fiancé, who lives in Cagayan de Oro, just informed me she has a 'running nose', and it's it's flu season in the Philippines. I asked her if her feet were cold as well... Thankfully she said, no way....lol

Don't know if it's a simple sniffle, or the flu as of yet. I am a bit worried about the airlines refusing to allow her to board.

Airline SOP on travel is a bit ambiguous as what's a go/no-go to board for a minor illness. If I have to lose my ticket and re-book, so be it

I forgot to ask her if she received a flu shot at St Lukes...anyone know are flu shots mandatory for the K-1 medical exam ?

Anyone know of any current flu outbreaks in Mindanao ?

I'm beginning to break out in a sweat and I'm sure It's not the flu :o

I have flown home many times with flu like symptoms from Philippines, due to all the pollution in Philippines

I have seen a few Americans & Aussie having to go home to get proper medical treatment since the Philippines has poor medicine and medical facilities in general.

I don't see this being a issue.

Funny thing people in Philippines think they can catch a cold from rain, Once it starts to rain the streets are cleared out

Rob187,

IMO, I don't think it will be a problem. I'm not aware of any contagious outbreaks of any sort in Mindanao. My wife is from the greater CDOC area and regularly communicates with family. Even dengue cases are at "normal" levels. To our knowledge, flu shots ARE NOT mandatory at the K-1 exam; I was unable to locate anything on the SLEC website. However, when she saw the civil surgeon in the US, she was administered the flu shot since her arrival coincided with the normal winter flu season. I'm guessing you've flown before and have encountered a seatmate who obviously was ill? She'll be departing from Languindingan? No problem.

The ONLY caution I have is if she's transiting through Taipei. Two years ago, our family had to pass through a checkpoint that scanned the internal body temperature to see if anyone had a fever. That was during a SAR;s scare though and was two years ago. This experience most likely is outdated an inaccurate but I wanted to let you know.

Relax. Makeup can cover almost all traces of a cold.

Savor her arrival.

Regards.

Runny nose... heck everyone with allergies would be turned away at the gate... YIKES!!

No flu shot at St. Luke's.

You need to saddle up and go for a ride.... relax.

She should rest, take fluids, and all the basic OTCs for treating a simple cold. She should also be aware that if she is transferring planes in Dubai, they may do the external temperature scan that Torete mentioned (they're looking for something else and have become a touch excessive about checking passengers for health/wellness). About the worst I can imagine happening there, though, is that she is pulled aside because she has a fever and asked about her recent travel history. They'll get that data and put her on her way.

They do temp checks at HK airport too. I've had that thermometer gun to my head twice on 2 different trips
