AK-47s become hot commodity after U.S. sanctions

ere's a surprising effect of the latest U.S. sanctions against Russia: a run on AK-47s.

Among the companies sanctioned this week was Kalashnikov Concern, the maker of the automatic weapon.

"We sell some of the Kalashnikov Concern stuff and that has been selling fast," said Robert Keller, manager of K-Var Corp., a Las Vegas-based online gun distributor.

Keller said his company has been sold out of the guns since the sanctions went into effect. On K-Var's web site, AK-47s are listed as "out of stock."

The Obama administration issued sanctions against Russian companies in response to Russia's role in a separatist movement in Ukraine. An increasingly violent civil war between Ukraine's government and the separatists resulted in tragedy Thursday, when a Malaysian Airlines passenger plane was shot down, killing 298 people.

According to the Treasury Department, Kalashnikov Concern is banned from importing its guns -- including the AK-47 and more advanced AK-74 -- into the United States. But, in a statement posted on its Web site, Treasury said Americans are allowed to own, buy and sell the guns, so long as they were already in the U.S. prior to the sanctions.

Keller said he is scrambling to acquire more Kalashnikov guns from U.S. distributors. He also said he still selling many weapons similar to the AK-47, such as the SAM7 brand of Bulgarian-made rifles.

Kalashnikov Concern could not be reached for comment

AK-47 stands for Avtomat Kalashnikov-47, a reference to the full automatic action of the military models, the name of inventor Mikhail Kalashnikov, and the year of its unveiling, 1947, according to "The Gun," a book by C.L. Chivers.

AK's are still legal just the russian ak is forbidden.to import, Just makes all guns a bit harder for poor folks to afford. ... don't know why the kenyan hates poor folks so much.

Hate is a strong word for what is simply the indifference of the rich to the plight of poor people. Hell there are less wealthy VJ posters who think that poor people are poor because they are lazy and deserve it.

Russian AKs are "top of the line" and poor folks couldn't buy them anyway.

I had a convo with some of my college-educated friends a few months back. You know, the ones who "do it right" and "follow all the rules" who are now hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt because they went to school, bought a cookie-cutter house and have a couple car payments, kids and a boat?

They were telling me how poor I was and I was the only one in the group with a positive net worth.

I don't know about you, but some posters in the past have been fairly open about their salaries and/or what they do for a living.

As a kenyan supporter he understands your plight.... Kenyan kare has made everyone's healthcare go up ...Many people have 5-10,000 deducts. now. . The electric bills have in many cases skyrocketed. Coal industry shut down. Fuel prices at an all time high....Property taxes ready to skyrocket because undocumented democrats will need support services never before seen at a community level ... More schools,more jails,teachers .LEO'S.. 10's of thousands of raped 10-16 year old girls will need that support staff... could total hundred's of thousands of dollars per child ( no doubt he understands the cost to see a shrink these days) what a few hundred bucks a session over the period of 10 /20 years 4-5 times a week....all paid by property owners of your community...Everyone's standard of living is going south ....Unless you are a teacher( strong democrat) in most cases. or Leo. or part of that support staff. .....America is indeed in transformation.
