Hi-

I was originally meeting my fiance in Cebu for a couple weeks, to meet her family and her in person. However, she took a job in Macau to help pay for her siblings school, it pays about 4 times what she'd make in Cebu. Her new job is great, but turns out they don't give much time off.

Does this complicate things if I meet her in person in Macau instead of Cebu? From what friends told me, meeting family is important.

I just want to make sure after I come back, I'll have no problems with the k-1 visa.

-Thanks.

Whether you meet the family is just one of the many factors they consider. A simple explanation will suffice. Just be ready to show evidence of a bonafide relationship. The Philippines has a low K1 visa denial rate so the odds are in your favor at the outset. Plus the visas tend to be processed rather quickly. Good luck on your journey!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

No issue with where you two met. Only thing at is important is having met within the past 2 years for the petition process, and having evidence of a genuine relationship for the visa process at USEM.

Meeting family isn't part of the requirement. But it is nice to have met her family.

If she's living in Macau, wouldn't you be petitioning her from there or does she intend to move back when you file?

It isn't an immigration issue. It is a marriage compatibility issue.

If you stay with her family, meet her friends and schoolmates, neighbors, etc. you are going to know much more about her character and personality. There are also people with envy and spite that are more than happy to spill the beans on things they think will make you reconsider marrying her. All this is why scammers try to meet you in a different city and say it is too dangerous or uncomfortable to meet you in their own home.

It isn't that this one is a scammer, but that there are genuine reasons for meeting the family and getting to know them personally. Were this me, I would go visit the family myself if she couldn't come. But you aren't me and your circumstances may be completely different. I never pursued marriage with someone I met on the internet. I met them in person, where I traveled, and it was surprising how fast people came out of the woodwork with information. It was really easy to see what kind of parents and upbringing they had.

Thanks, this is just a signal option I am considering. I want to make sure its viable, in the first place. My friend who has done this already, is a little paranoid. I thought the place of meeting didn't matter but had to make sure.

thanks again.
