Visiting after marriage, before Visa application?

Hi everyone, quick question:

If you're married, but you haven't applied for the proper Visa yet (whichever it may be), is it difficult to travel into the USA? Might they assume you're trying to illegally immigrate? Can they even tell if you're married when they swipe your passport? (Not that I would lie to them to get in, but what information can they access?)

My fiancee and I are weighing different options in terms of a Visa, and because we may end up waiting a while to apply for a Visa once we're married, I'm just wondering if going to visit each other will be a problem.

Any experiences/knowledge/advice?

Depends on many circumstances including country of residence and personal situation.

Yes

I doubt it unless they ask

YMMV

You should be okay, however it is down to the POE officer as to whether you are allowed into the country or not, they have to assess whether you are intending to leave the country within the allowed time period permited by your visa or the visa waiver program. If you are worried about it get your spouse to take evidence of ties to their own country.. such as tennancy agreement / mortgage, letter from employer as this will go some way in showing that they have the intention of returning to their own country.
