SSN application under verification after EAD?

Hello everyone,

So I got my EAD card on may 22 and it was issued on may 16. The first thing I did was to apply for my SSN the very next day. When they received my application, they gave me a letter saying that they were going to have to verify my documents so they could assign a SSN for me because my status was not updated by the DHS. it also said that such verification could take around 4 WEEKS!

I went to the SSA office agan today, and the same guy who processed my application said that my application was still pending and not verified and that I should have waited two weeks after I got my EAD to apply for my SSN and I could have had my number right away (He didnt tell me that when I first brought my application - I felt like yelling at him). After that, of course he said that theres nothing I could do but to wait for the verification process to end and then to wait for my card.

My questions are:

Is there anything I can do to try to get my number faster that those ridiculous 4 weeks?

Should I contact the USCIS since that guy said that my status hasnt been updated after I got my EAD?

The company who gave me this job offer over a month ago needs my SSN to process my background check. I was never aware that this delay could happen as many of the people here get their numbers right away. I am so desperate now...

Thank you.

When I came on a K1 visa I got an SSN in my maiden name with my I-94, it took 10 days to receive. When I went back with my EAD to get the name changed to my married name I was told they had to verify it and it could take up to 4 weeks. 4 weeks passed and nothing so I went back to the office and was told they were still waiting on verification. I spoke with supervisors and was told there was nothing they could do and I just had to wait. It took 9 weeks for me to receive my updated card. I'm not sure there's anything you can do to speed it up, sorry.

Maybe someone who has will stop by and advise you.

Thank you so much for your prompt response. Hopefully it doesn't take that long for me to get the number/card but your case gives me an idea of what I could expect :(

I hope you get yours quicker and that the delay in mine was just bad luck and not standard practice.

Good luck for your new job and the future.

Don't feel bad I waited the two weeks and then applied and I still wasn't in the system!!!!!

Ya it just sucks I mean u wait a long time to get the stupid EAD and then ur still unable to start working for some companies cuz they need ur ssn to check ur background. Kinda pointless procedure since u won't have any info since it your first ssn. Oh well ...

Hector let me know when you get yours so I will know how long I have to wait. Thanks!

I was able to get a printout of my number today in a different office then the one I applied for. The guy at the initial office kept giving me bullsh*t and said that it was impossible to get the number before the actual card gets in the mail and I call the main office to make sure he was wrong and yes he was. The guy on the ph suggested me to go to a different office and ask for a supervisor and he was right. Now I have my number and will go to the dmv tomorrow

That's a great suggestion about going to another office to get a printout of your SSN number. I have been waiting over 3 weeks now since I applied for the SSN with my EAD on May 16. I initially went to the Brooklyn office but I will try another office tomorrow!

I also need the darn SSN in order to get my NY license...never freaking ends!
