Also, it takes a lot less cows to make a leather jacket (or pair of shoes etc) than it takes minks to make a mink fur coat.. Not into the fur thing but I definately wouldnt go around spray painting fur coats so ppl cant wear them anymore! (just means more animals would have to die for yet another fur coat..)

So it's on sheer number? How many minks is ok to kill then?

No.. that is in addition to also using most of the rest of the animal for something else.. (note the "also" at the beginning of my statement.. it refers to ladybutterfly's comment on how cattle are also used for meat) I just dont like the idea of using only the fur and letting the rest of the animal(s) rot uselessly.. At least leather tends to be a byproduct. Definately not sheer number since i'm pretty sure they go through fewer minks than they do cows..

Right, but if you're like my friend....vegetarian and fur protester.....I hardly think the fact that cows are eaten is justification for wearing leather when she herself doesn't eat them cos she thinks it's wrong. See where I'm goin with this?

Who is to say what's a 'useful' purpose and what isn't? You can wear an animal's skin so long as you eat them?

Hmmm I would say that if she doesn't eat them and protest for their rights then she should not be wearing leather or any animal skin products. That would be the same as eating them, I think? So vinyl shoes, man made leather like stuff and polyester fur for her would be appropriate.

LOL, vinyl shoes and polyester in nearly any form are always inappropriate. For everyone. :)

I can respect ppl's right to be against fur so long as they don't own any leather :)

I think there's reasonable arguments against fur because of the way the animal is killed and that the animal is killed only for its fur. Leather from cows is a byproduct from beef. There are those against killing any animal regardless of the circumstances, but they don't represent all view points.

I knew someone who travelled to Korea to visit her mother's homeland - and while she was there she ate dog. Some people here would be repulsed by that while they have no qualms about eating beef.

well, selective mercy is something I don't quite understand. What makes it ok to kill a cow? Cos you eat the meat? And if you're talking humanitarian reasons on HOW an animal is killed, then let's talk about halal meat or how cows are killed in general.

All I'm pointing out is people shouldn't be selective on what's ok to kill and what's not when it comes to non-domestic animals. The outrage that is met by wearing fur is ridiculous...because where's the outrage at the leather industry? And you think that ALLL the cow skin for the leather industry is used from meat cows? Think about that the next time you sit in your car with leather seats.

It's selective bleeding heart mentality is what it is to me.

Alright..gonna throw my .02 into the ring and hope I don't get back a dollars worth.

I'm a long term vegetarian(almost 17 years now). I don't wear leather or fur. I swerve to avoid smooshing bunnies that run across the road when it's safe to do so.

Having said all that...my kids all eat meat. I don't have a problem with deer hunters so long as they use as much of that animal as possible(the idiots that chop the head off then leave the rest for the buzzards just pi@@ me off..and yes they do it, I drive rural roads daily). And let's not get started on animal testing.

Does that make me a hypocrite? Maybe yes, maybe no. It's all about free choice IMO. My kids are served meat because it's a personal choice I made...I want them to think for themselves as adults, not blindly follow anyone, including me. Do I like the fact fur is making a comeback? No, I think it's a horrible waste in many ways, but I realize me foaming at the mouth and waving signs around doesn't do any good. Sensible conversation with solid points do.

So, you wanna wear fur? Wear it...just don't ask me if I want to feel how amazing it feels.

It's really charming when dogs get hold of the carcass, partially dismantle it and leave it in the middle of the road. (need a pukey emote)

BS... Cows are raised to be eaten and their skin is made into leather. Fur animals are raised for their skin alone. There's a BIG difference there.
