Where did you see something about sending in your originals? The I-129F instructions tell you to send photocopies and that your originals will not likely be returned to you.

Copies. Unless specifically required that an original document be filed with an application or petition, a legible photocopy may be submitted. Original documents submitted when not required may remain a part of the record, and will not be automatically returned to you.

5. What Documents Do You Need to Show That You Are a U.S. Citizen?
a. If you were born in the United States, submit a copy, front and back, of your birth certificate.

You will just do a new I-134 with updated supporting documentation when the time comes for the K-1 interview. And I suppose you can always ask at the K-1 interview if they would be willing to return the original birth certificate if you provide them with a copy instead. They may or may not oblige. Someone with experience in London might be able to provide more insight on that topic.

Things can definitely be confusing if you started before finding this site & did it on your own. Misleading information is everywhere & I hate that this happened to you. If needed, it shouldn't cost that much or be that much of a hassle to get a new one. I had to get a new "long form" version of mine when I applied for my passport. I just went to my local courthouse (not sure if you have to go to the county courthouse specifically of where you were born or not. I'm lucky enough to still live in the city I was born) & it was just $25, I think. Showed some ID and I got it instantly.

You are very welcome! Mistakes happen. Good news is that this doesn't hurt your chances in any way, and it can be replaced! (:
