Hi everyone - asked this question in the Interviews forum, but no one seemed to have an answer, so I thought I would try the larger crowd.

We're about 10 days away from the interview, and 20 days from POE. When we got married last year, my husband decided he would change his last name (he's a hip, progressive kind of guy, dontchaknow), but we didn't want to make any changes while the visa process was underway. Plus the German bureaucracy with things like that is even stricter than the US.

So now we're looking into how to do the name change after he gets here, but when I look up getting a name change on a green card, the USCIS form I-90 says at the top "don't use this for a conditional card". Does that mean we'll have to wait the 2 years before Removal of Conditions in order to do the name change? Or is there a way to do it sooner?

Any input would be appreciated - thanks y'all!

Step 1. Get the name changed with the local court in the US.

Step 2. Do I-90 and pay the fees for the new green card.

Step 3. When the time for removal of conditions comes (2yrs minus 90 days of the date on the conditional green card), you'll still do I-751 and all the evidence they want to see so start collecting papers as soon as he arrives in the US.

Thanks so much! So even though the I-90 page on the USCIS site says *not* to use it for a conditional green card, I still can?

Yes you can because you're not trying to remove conditions with that - you know I-90 is for changing of green card (through name change).

You'll still do the I-751 for conditions removal when the time comes for it.
