Hello All,

I have a friend that is currently in the US on a J1 Visa and in training for hospitality Management. She is working for a large hotel chain but the Visa will expire in September. How can she cnahge the status to a work VISA and stay in the country to work after finishing her internship? I dont know if it is possible. Does anyone know of the process if it can be done? Anyone has gone through the same situation that can provide advice? I appreciate any and all advice. This site is awesome!

Thanks!

She may be subject to the two-year residency rule, meaning she would need to spend two years in the Philippines before being eligible to apply for permanent residency in the US. Is she? It should say so in her program details.

Most unlikely to have a 2 year HRR.

Missed the boat for this year, but something she should have discussed with her Employer.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

The H1B ship has sailed for this year so she is up the creek without a paddle.

There seems to be a lot of misconceptions out there about large hotel chains being able to give people legal paths to the US, even for those that are here illegally so I'm hoping they get caught for abusing workers like that (doesn't seem to be the case here but I wouldn't be surprised if she was led to think she would get a visa out of it).
