SSN application in manual checking and insurance refusing to add me without it

Hi All,

Whilst I know that technically they should not be able to do this they have and they are not budging.

I applied at the local ssa office just under a month after getting here. Without asking they said they were putting in a manual application with no option not to. Called the main toll free number for an update last week and they were less than useful, rude and stating they could not give an update on the application as they were not allowed to ask security questions over the phone. I called the local office and they could confirm that the application was still pending and that if I left a message then they would call me back. A week later they haven't called me back.

Then I find out that the state employer of my fiance, now husband, will only add me to the health insurance with an ssn. Despite me asking for it to be under another number they have refused and obviously not going to listen to me demanding that they do something they don't normally do.

I have emailed SAVE.Help@uscis.dhs.gov asking if it has been updated so I can go back to the ssa office and see if I can get a new application in but I only have a set amount of time to apply for the insurance after my qualifying event.

I officially hate paperwork, ok rant over. I realize that this is just a moaning post and not much can be done other than us going to see them on Friday and asking to apply again.

If getting no redress with the insurance company's low-level flunkies, keep climbing up through their ranks until you find someone who has the power to do what you want. An SSN is not required to obtain insurance, although a lot of insurance companies will tell you that it is because they like to have it and it makes their lives easier.

good self-answers! you can't apply a second time; you can't really do much about it but wait...and pray that you get it already. insurance companies have the right to ask for info and your husband's just happens to be one of those who do. don't stress out too much.

Well, SAVE.Help@uscis.dhs.gov, are unable to confirm or deny if my SAVE record is correct so I guess a visit to the ssa on friday will be required. Pity as I was going to put my aos in today as well but will wait till this is sorted now so that their systems don't get messed up any more than they are.

SSN received today, sorting insurance tomorrow. Glad that wait is over, now to wait for NOA1 on AOS

Turns out that they had put the wrong birth date on my application, no wonder it was not matching the DHS record.

Went back yesterday to change my name with my marriage certificate and green card, birth year out by 2 years. Had that fixed and applied for the change of name but have now said it will take another 4 weeks to verify.
