I filed an I-864 when I petitioned for residency for my wife. At her interview we got the "blue sheet" and I was asked to add a joint financial sponsor. The joint sponsor and I are trying to figure out how to fill out some things on the 2 forms required of her and her husband, the I-864 and I-864a respectively. The co-sponsor's husband will be filing the I-864a as an additional household member with contributing income. His additional income isn't needed but since they file taxes jointly, it looks to be easier to go that route and he is OK with doing it that way.

1. Does the joint sponsor check box 1.d. as the only joint sponsor (I being some kind of "principal sponsor"), or does she check 1.e. second of two joint sponsors and I am considered the first joint sponsor?

2. Since I already have submitted an I-864 for myself previously as the petitioner/sponsor, how do I figure into this additional I-864?

My wife and I will not be living with the co-sponsor but it appears that my wife must be added again here as their "household member" (she is listed an a household member on my original I864 as well). Do I have to be added as a "household member" as well on this new I-864? If so, the only place I see to add me would be in part 5 #7. But since we are not going to live with them, it doesn't seem like I correctly belong in 5.7 since it is for people living in the household.

The co-sponsor's individual income is already plenty sufficient for a household of either 3 or 4 so my added income isn't needed, but I want this to be correct to avoid more delays.

If I don't go on the new I-864, is the cosponsor's household size 3 or 4? It's really 2, but it appears that my wife has to be added as a 3rd member. Not sure how I fit in on the new form, if at all, as a 4th member.

3. It appears that in part 6 the co-sponsor puts her individual income in line 5. I assume that that would be just her income and not her husband's, even though they file jointly (they are retired). So she separates out her income and then her husband gets added in part 7 as a household member with contributing income, adding in his portion of their income. Then he fills out I864a additionally. Am I understanding that correctly?

4. On the husband's I864a, does he put only his income in parts 10 and 11? If we are splitting the income on the I-864, I'm guessing that we need to have only his portion here on the I-864a.

It's all unnecessarily confusing.

Thanks for any help clarifying this!

I have one joint sponsor and I did it the way you mentioned.

I did -Im the petitioner

joint sponsor - I am the only joint sponsor.

I think 2 joint sponsor are needed when there are multiple people immigrating together.

If your co-sponsors income is enough, the husband doesnt need to file i864a, even if they file taxes jointly.

1. Does the joint sponsor check box 1.d. as the only joint sponsor (I being some kind of "principal sponsor"), or does she check 1.e. second of two joint sponsors and I am considered the first joint sponsor?

Yes, only joint sponsor

2. Since I already have submitted an I-864 for myself previously as the petitioner/sponsor, how do I figure into this additional I-864?

My wife and I will not be living with the co-sponsor but it appears that my wife must be added again here as their "household member" (she is listed an a household member on my original I864 as well). Only your wife will be counted as part of the household size, because he/she will be sponsoring her. You dont need to be added to this size, so it would be Your wife, sponsor + parnter (only 3)

3. It appears that in part 6 the co-sponsor puts her individual income in line 5. I assume that that would be just her income and not her husband's, even though they file jointly (they are retired). Only her individual income, if its enough.

Dont see the need of this one.

It's all unnecessarily confusing.

Thanks for any help clarifying this!

1. YES, check box 1.d.-he is the only joint sponsor.

2. You will not be counted on his form. Your wife will be counted on her and your form. If she is a joint sponsor, your wife does not have to be a household member. Co-sponsor and joint sponsor are two different things.

3. If her income is enough, the husband does not need to fill I-864a. Sp part 6.5 - her individual income should be enough to support your wife and all her household members.

If her income is not enough, husband will fill out I-864a and as you mentioned, his income will be added in part 7.

4. YES to 10. On 11, it has to be the joint income. same for her in part 13.

Sorry for the incorrect use of terms. My wife is not a co-sponsor, she is only the beneficiary and for now, has no income. I am the petitioner (already submitted my I-864) and we now also have a joint sponsor who is married and files taxes jointly with her husband.

I think I have all those terms straight now. :S

I think that we will include the joint sponsor's husband's income anyway, even though, according to the regulations, the joint sponsor alone makes enough. Our CO has shown to be unpredictable since he already decided that my annual income of almost triple the minimum requirement and my six figures in liquid assets was insufficient and required a joint sponsor. This time I want to give him whatever will be guaranteed to make him happy.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks, PatchSC. That is very helpful!
