Hello Friends,

My fiance is currently pregnant with estimate date of delivery Sept 26, 2014. I will be visiting her end of April '14 to obtain necessary K1 visa related from her and will file immediately upon my return to the US. I will visit her one more time end of June '14 prior to the birth of our child. Once our child is born, I will be planning to visit Costa Rica for 2 weeks. If humanly possible, I would like to complete the CRBA process while I'm present in Costa Rica within the 2 week period.

I've reviewed the the Cost Rica Embassy CRBA website. I've sent a similar inquiry to the Costa Rica Embassy. I would appreciate insight from the community based on their personal experience/knowledge:

  1. Required Supporting Documents section of the website states "The child’s original Costa Rican birth certificate, issued on stamped paper (papel con timbres) from the Civil Registry (Registro Civil)."
    • Who's responsible for submitting the birth certificate to Registro Civil...the hospital or the parents?

  • Once birth certificate submitted to Registro Civil, how long does it take before we can obtain the original copy?

  • Does Registro Civil require written explanation regarding nature of request (i.e. to file for CRBA)?
  1. The American Citizen parent must appear in person to sign the CRBA application. If only one parent is present in Costa Rica, the “Statement of Consent from Absent Parent,” form DS-3053, is required for the passport.
    • As indicated, I would love to complete the CRBA process while I visit my child and fiance for 2 weeks post birth. I would like to schedule an appointment the day our child is born. Based on your experience, how long did it take for the CR Embassy to grant an interview?

  • Assuming the interview is not possible during my 2 week visit. does completion of DS-3053 form allow the bypass of my presence and grant US Citizenship/Passport to our child?
  • Website allows scheduling of interview via the internet. Assuming I know how long it will take for us to obtain the birth certificate from Registro Civil (let's say 1 week), can I schedule an interview for a date post birth but prior to actual delivery date to ensure interview is done while I'm present?

Please accept our sincerest gratitude for your insight and feedback!

God Bless!
