Hey all. I just found this site and had to join. I'm an American civilian working under contract to the US Army here in Germany. Because I am under the Status of Forces Agreement I am exempted from the typical German immigration laws. No visa required. no German income taxes, etc. Hypothetically speaking, if I were to marry a third-country national (for arguments sake, from Russia) while she was visiting Germany, what would be the process be for getting permission for her to live with me here in Germany? Has anyone ever run across anything like this before?

This would be a question for the JAG there at the base... they should be able to help you there as well... but I believe that as your spouse, she would also come under the Status of Forces Agreement with a Dependent ID Card, no different that anyone else's spouse...

Before you return to the US, you would be able to file an I-130 with the consulate in Frankfurt to be able to get her Green Card... Do this about 6 months in advance.

Wow Zyggy. Thanks for the quick response. I do plan on contacting the JAG here if things develop that far. You sound like you've been over here before. I have used the consulate in Frankfurt (at thier old downtown location) before for my own passport renewal and was really impressed with the service. Fast and even friendly. :-) I was just wondering if anyone else had been in this situation before.
