Dear US visa experts and enthusiasts,

I had a quick question in case someone out there might have advice on this matter. I am a US citizen, and my wife is fortunate enough to have been granted a marriage-based immigration visa (it says that it is an I-551) to enter the USA.

We are about to buy plane tickets to move to the USA. We were thinking it would make sense to move in two trips. We would first travel on a round trip ticket to the USA with most of our belongings (the one-way tickets are currently outrageously expensive on the dates we are looking at). At this point I would expect my wife to be assigned a green card, and we would use the return trip to go for a week or two to finish up our affairs in the original country at some point, before returning for good to the USA.

This seems to me as though it ought to be a fine and reasonable plan. I just wanted to check to see if anyone thinks it might cause a problem for us if when we arrive and hand them the immigration packet they see that there is a return leg on our tickets. If anyone has any thoughts about this I would be very interested to know.

Thanks in advance!

As I am sure others would tell you, it won't be a problem. Once your wife enters the USA her immigrant visa serves as a temporary I-551 for one year after entry so that she can go back and forth if she wants. I do not think that having a return ticket will be a problem at all. What I would advise is to pay the immigrant fee ($165) before she comes down so that there is no delay in her receiving her physical green card after entering the USA.

Thank you very much for the advice here!

I know I am probably just being paranoid. It's just that I have been delayed by so many crazy rules and problems in this immigration process that I want to double check everything. It sounds like you are confident that having a return ticket when she arrives for the first time carrying her immigration packet will not be a problem and will allow them to start processing her green card. Thanks for the reminder about paying the fee in advance as well.
