Yes anything that is not in English it has to be translate for sure!!!!!

So, a document that is written in the local language of the country, for my wife's case Chinese, that won't be adequate?

If that is true, can my wife just translate it into English? For example, her 50 year old Chinese mom wrote a letter. Who should translate this?

That's what I am confused about. The consular office (not consular officer) told me that the officer "normally" knows how to read, write and speak the country's language, so no need to translate for non-immigration cases. But who knows? .... I am at lost too so I am hoping people here would experience this ?

Embassies can provide translators for non-immigrant interviews.

Based on many people's experiences here though, the CO rarely (if ever) asks to see documents during tourist visa interviews unless maybe the purpose is work-related.

I am not concerned about letters, etc. but what about like home's deed, real estates that are not written in English? Those are part of the 'ties' to one's home country. So I am at lost whether to translate them or not. The officer does speak the country's language so a translator may not need for speaking.

Embassies have a bunch of local employees. Reading documents shouldn't be a problem.

And even for bank accounts and titles, COs don't always ask to see them. I tried for the tourist visa 3x and I was never asked for a single document. Could be different in consulates in China though
