We have our K1 in hand (finally!) and are getting ready to fly back from Greece to the United States on Friday. We will be entering through Washington-Dulles. I have heard some people say it was possible to get an immediate work permit on entering at some POEs. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a work permit immediately at IAD? For obvious financial reasons it would be better to be able for my fiance to work immediately, though we were planning on waiting until after the adjustment of status.

Not possible.. You could file for EAD ($380) once you enter US with K1 visa but it would be a waste of money since EAD takes 2-3 months to process and only valid till the I-94 expiration date.

In the best case, you will be eligible to work for about a month, probably less.

The worst case is that the card arrives after I-94 expires and you've just donated $380 to USCIS.

It is best that you send out all the forms AOS/EAD/AP (I-485/I-864/I-765/I-131) TOGETHER to USCIS Chicago address asap after marriage.

The latest fee for AOS is I-485 $985 + $85 biometric fee for a total of $1070, filing EAD and AP together is free.

Nope, they don't issue work permits at POE. If you want permission to work, you need to apply for your EAD. Its advised to apply after you are married and file AOS, since the filing fee is waived and your EAD is good for 1 year. You CAN apply as soon as you enter the US, but you will have to pay a filing fee and your EAD will expire when your I-94 expires.

Best advice: Get married, and file AOS with your EAD and AP as soon as possible after marriage. Your EAD card will arrive about 2 months after you file.
