I think it entirely depends on the type of position.

I've come right out and asked before. For a teaching position, I was told that I needed to give my answer within 2 days.

The chief actuary at my company kept us hanging for a couple of weeks.

I'd say, take your offered salary and divide it by $20,000. That's the number of days you have..... Just a guess though.

if you are in an at will state, you can quit right now. however, if you want to use them as a reference in the future, 2 weeks is a minimum recommendation.

Charles,

My apologies, I guess my question was not clear.

If I am offered a job, how many days or weeks do you think I can reasonably wait before I communicate my response to them? I can either accept the offer or reject the offer. Depending on what order the offers come (I am being optimistic here) I may need up to a week to decide. What are your thoughts on this?

Gupt,

Keeping the employer hanging, for you to decide on the job offer? 2-3 days maximum. Anything else indicates indecision, or dissatisfaction with the offer. If the offer is good and is at least, 10-15% more than you make now, then take it.

Any ideas? I have heard varied answers ranging from 2 days to 2 weeks before I respond to a job offer. Personally, I've never dragged it beyond 2-3 days but this time I may need to. Your thoughts?

The thing is though, he said he's expecting several offers. Personally, I'd rather take my chances pushing the 2-3 day limit in order to hold out for better offers.

I finished interviewing with one company and they've indicated they'll get back to me early next week with a possible offer. I have a fourth interview with a different company on Wednesday and I'd much rather work for them. But if they decide not to make me an offer, I don't want to wait around. Both companies, if they make the offers, will be offering at least 15-20% more than my current pay (so that won't be an issue).

Well in that case, stall tactics prevail!!!! There are risks, but they appear to be worthy.

Best of luck in landing the best one!!

Well, that will buy you at least one day!!! :D

I surmise this offer is in your city? If so, and you indicated that you need more time than that, I would suggest that you need to discuss it with your wife, who is currently out of the country? How's that?

Ok, what stall tactics would you use? I was thinking of asking them for detail of their medical/dental/vision plans down to yearly premiums and copay level. And 401k vesting schedule. Your thoughts?

I think that might be a little weak. I mean, people do know that it would be pretty easy to discuss this with your wife if she were overseas. There are telephones.
