The form is optional. However, I encourage you to file it anyway. Just like the EAD, the fee for it is waived when filed with a pending I-485, and you never know if something may come up while waiting for your green card approval. I have seen too many people posting that they need to leave the US but never filed for AP and they wish they had. Some green card approvals are taking 8 months to a year.

The form is short and easy to fill out. No explanation statement is required when filed with a pending I-485 and you can simply leave the dates and length of trip blank, then hand-write in Unknown after printing it out.
