That's why they invented happy pills... to get you through an unendurable but unavoidable experience with the minimum of unpleasantness. That said, I flew from Australia to the US without using medication because I was more afraid of the pills than the plane... I'm claustrophobic, and I survived. Once you get through the first hour or so, the fear ebbs away. Nothing bad is going to happen - just think about the good things at the destination (especially if you're flying into the US to be with your loved one/s)...

apart from a few tears on takeoff I was absolutely fine when up in the air!

im aware that fear of flying is irrational which is why its a phobia not just a normal everyday life fear so im afraid statistics aren't going to help, I think the only thing that does help as with any fear is just forcing yourself to do it.

Take-off may feel scary, but, given the safety margins on airliners, losing an engine will not prevent you climbing out safely. Of course, if you hit a flock of birds while climbing out from La Guardia and lose both engines, then you're going to have a problem.

Landing on the other hand, is another matter. There is an old saying about flying.

"If you can walk away after a landing, it was a good one. If you can still use the plane, it was a great one."

And when the USAF introduced its first supersonic plane, the F-100 Super Sabre, they coined another.

"Any landing is just a controlled crash, anyway."

Glad your flight went okay.

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself
