Extending J1 to Attend Cousin's Wedding

My cousin will be studying abroad in San Fran CA from January 10th. His J1 visa runs out on June 16th 2014.

I am getting married in San Diego CA on August 16th 2014. I have family and friends coming over for it.

Is it possible for my cousin to extend his J1 visa date so that he can stay until after the wedding, avoiding going home and then having to pay for another flight in August to come back on the visa waiver?

His course finishes in May, and he was going to come and stay with me for a month after until hi visa expires. Would be great if he didn't have to go back until after the wedding though. Will save him a lot of money!

How to extend J1 visa if his course already ended?

Yeah, I guess so... But with view to stay until after my wedding. He doesn't want to just stay for the heck of it and try and fiddle the system, just save having to shell £700/£800 on ANOTHER plane ticket in August when he will have just come back in June.

i like the fiddle-y bits on the system where a VWP person pays for a plane ticket.

You've enough time to handle the budget for this, also..

Yay Marriage !!

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Once the J1 program is finished, the person has 30 days "grace period" to remain in the U.S. to finish up anything they want to do (close out their apartment, etc, if it was a long term J1, visit family and friends, etc.). Any time spent after that is an out-of-status overstay and could have serious repercussions for future plans to travel to the US. Not worth it -- better to buy another plane ticket and make another trip.
