This is a great Xmas present. I got it last year.

Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection

Anyone seen Rope? That's a seriously messed up movie...

Am also a big fan of Akira Kurosawa - mostly his old Samurai pictures. The new DVD version of Seven Samurai is remastered and looks like it was made yesterday.

Seven Samurai is a great film! George Lucas borrowed so much from that film when he made Star Wars, like the part when Han Solo is yelling while running towards the Storm Troopers and they instinctively run away. :star:

I thought it was Hidden Fortress that was used as the template for Star Wars. Seven Samurai was remade as The Magnificent Seven (which was not anything like as good, IMO - despite having a pretty iconic cast). Incidentally I saw Kagemusha the other day and was surprised to see that George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola produced it. Apparently Kurosawa had a problem getting funding during the 1970s.

I started to watch Rashomon but I never finished it - the actor who played the crazy samurai in Seven Samurai is also in this film and he does the same wild laugh which kind of killed it for me. I realize this film predated Seven Samurai, but part of the appeal of that movie for me was this band of misfits, each with their own unique personality.

That's Toshiro Mifune, he was in a lot of Kurosawa's stuff. Rashomon is a much slower movie - but has a very original (at the time) narrative technique. It's one of those movies that you get more out of the more times you watch it. It doesn't have the action of Seven Samurai, or Yojimbo and Sanjuro (two other iconic Kurosawa movies that star Mifune). A lot of people I know find those movies heavy going - but Kurosawa isn't an 'art' director like Ingmar Bergman - his movies are very accessible.
