Hi everyone,

Just wondering if any of you could share your experience regarding bringing a dog into the United States, specially if you're travelling from Spanish-speaking countries. POE will be Newark, NJ.

I'm going with a K1 visa and I'm bringing my pet dog. I already have the flight taken care of. I'm traveling in January 2014.

Did anyone do this? Can you share your experience?

Thanks!!

It is very easy... Our family pets travel with us almost everywhere we go and it is really not complicated.

There are a few things you must consider:

1 - The requirements for entry in the US are simple. You need to take your dog to your vet and have the vet give you a health certificate. Check out this link: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/

There is no quarantine or anything of the kind upon arrival in the US.

2 - You need to check with the local authorities in Argentina if they require you to present documentation allowing your pet to leave the country. In some countries, the equivalent of the USDA requires that animals be cleared for export before they are allowed out. Call the airline and they can help you find out if you need any special additional documentation.

3 - Check if the airline you are using - United I presume - will take your pet. Depending on the size of the animal they will require that s/he be placed in a special crate - which you provide - and be loaded in the cargo bay of the aircraft. You will need to book space for your pet to travel in the same aircraft as you. If your pet is small enough to fit in a crate that will fit under the seat in front of you, then you may be able to take him/her on board.

All in all, it sounds more daunting than it really is.

Good luck!

And don't forget to get a K-9 visa for your dog, otherwise you may have problems.
