Very interesting. It's nice to see our community portrayed as normal people dealing with real issues, as opposed to the stereotypes.

I forwarded it on to my DH. It will be interesting to see what he thinks, since egyptian farmers don't tend to be highly regarded by the rest of egyptian society.

10/14/05 - married AbuS in the US lovehusband.gif

02/23/08 - Filed for removal of conditions.

Sometime in 2008 - Received 10 year GC. Almost done with USCIS for life inshaAllah! Huzzah!

12/07/08 - Adopted the fuzzy feline love of my life, my Squeaky baby th_catcrazy.gif

02/23/09 - Apply for citizenship

06/15/09 - Citizenship interview

07/15/09 - Citizenship ceremony. Alhamdulilah, the US now has another american muslim!

Rahma, I'd love to hear what your husband thinks about it, I didn't know about the status of egyptian farmers. Something I thought interesting was that he didn't really bother to learn English, and also that he felt he had to wear "street" clothes to take the subway.

Apparently farmers are the egyptian equivilent of a hillbilly here, not too bright or sophisticated. Every time I ask my husband to wear a galabiya or a thobe out, he refuses on the grounds that only farmers wear them outside  However, he can't explain why his best friend here wears one all the time and he's an egyptian-american and clearly not a farmer. Silly husband

I dunno if he hasn't bothered to learn english or just that he doesn't speak it well enough to give a decent interview to the New York Times. Most of the religious leaders in my area speak half way decent english, but it would be nice to have access to scholars locally who speak fluent english. Oh well, thats what Sunnipath and Hamza Yusuf lectures are for, I guess.

That is what I found interesting as well when I was talking to Hicham about it this morning. :)
