international travel to the USA always collects luggage first then go through immigrations. If your lucky it will be the same as a passport check with a couple of questions.

When my wife first arrived they asked her and her sons to step aside for an interview. took over 3 hours. I had flown to Chicago POE to meet them. I was burning mad and had to miss many flights back home. Then sat in the airport for another four hours waiting for four open seats. If it had not been for my airline milage status we would have stayed in the airport overnight.

In my case my wife looks very young. I think they did not believe she was the same person on the passport. They checked her fingerprints a couple times. She was 38 at the time and was asked when she was going to start school by a student when we registered her son at the high school a week later.

The last time we entered we had an expired 3 year green card with extension letter. they asked us to step aside. The new 10 year green card was in the mail at home and must have raised a little flag.

Good luck to all,

Fred

Are you certain? Just went thru Japan, Korea, and Philippines, and did Immigration, then baggage, then customs. Haven't flown to the USA from outside in a while now...

Immigration comes first, then luggage & customs, but that was at SEATAC.

Mine had to get her bags, go thru customs, then re-check her bags for further flight to AK.

and what do they do at immigration/ besides take her sealed envelop? do they open it?

She has a hair less than 2 hours in Detroit to get the plane to ny

Well, bear in mind this was Seattle, but it was pretty quick. Not many questions, maybe took 30 mins for all paperwork. Now I-94 is done online but doubt that speeds anything up. Might do an advanced search for "Detroit POE" and see what you get for more pertinent info.

All in all, most POEs are very straight forward and easy from my reading here.

hmmm 30 minutes is a lot of time when u have only 1:45 and she still needs to get her bag....find the other gate...might be across the tunnel in Detroit...wish she had 3 hours

speaking of the I-94......that is something they do online and we retrieve it later?

she gets nothing from immigration?

You can always study and familiarize her with the Detroit airport layout. Won't know the gate, but should be able to pick the terminal/concourse based on airline and "the norm" for them. Might help her out, knowing ahead of time which way to turn.

Yes, I-94 is online now. Just print a copy for your (marriage/DMV/SSN) needs.

Hey guys

My fiancée will arrive in Detroit as her POE,,,,final destination NY

What will they do first...usher her in thru immigration?

or get her Checked-in luggage?

What is the process when she meets with immigration/

thanks all

Immigrations first then customs. So make sure the "do not open envelope" is in her carry-on.

Immigrations will open the do not open envelope, sometimes ask a couple questions, but for the most part very simple and quick.

Immigration - pick up luggage - customs - re check final destination flight on boards for your departure gate - then lots of walking - finally , seat and wait for your plane .- hugs and kisses on arrival.

I would have her expect to miss her connecting flight unless Detroit is more efficient than most airports. You get off the airplane and walk to the CBP check point. I hightly recommend she uses the toilet as there is not one until she gets done with the entire process. No cell phones are to be used in this area either. You get in line and they will take the sealed envelope and stamp the passport. Here is where it becomes a toss of the dice. IF they have processed a K-1 it will be quick and easy. If the CBP has not seen a K-1 it may take a while. At DEN it wsa a very easy process for the K-1 but took forever to get the baggage and go thru customs--took about 2 hours. Once she clears the CBP passport control, she will gather up her luggage and go thru customs. This is again a slow process and can take a while. At MSP they have only 2 lines that you go thru and if you have any thing suspecious they send you to the x-ray scanner and then you get back in the front of the line. Our last trip thru MSP took 10 minutes for passport control and about 1 hour for customs and we arrived at the gate just as they were starting to board the plane with a 1.5 hour connecting flight and that was without having to process a K-1 visa. After going thru customs, she will recheck her luggage and make her way to the gate for the next flight.

For my wife DEN was the final destination when she came over on the K-1. So it did not matter how long it took, but had we gone thru ORD I am sure she would have missed her flight. I would see if you could meet her at Detroit and take a flight out the next day.

Good luck,

Dave
