Hey guys I am new to this!

Let me tell you a little about the situation I'm in, I am English and my fiancé is American I plan to move out there and marry him, we have been applying for our k-1 visa since last Nov, it seems to be taking forever, one thing after another seems to be getting in the way. We met 4 years ago at camp America, I have visited every year since on a travel visa whilst working the summer camps and we have had lots of other visits in the mean time back and forth to the states and England. My visa got approved in June and I hady medical 3 weeks ago, I have a history of depression (over 4 years ago) so had to get my doctor to send notes over and it's finally been sent to the embassy, my notes have a history of one overdose when I was 18 years old, do you think this could get in the way? Also does anyone have any idea of how long it takes for the interview to be scheduled once the medical information is at the embassy? I just want to be with my man! I hope someone can help, also with regards to driving once out there does anyone know how this would work I am moving to Connecticut and have a full British license?

Thanks

I can't answer all of those questions, but here is what I can attempt to help with...

1 - it's USUALLY 2-3 weeks from the embassy receiving your medical results to when they send the interview letter (assuming you have sent Packet 3 forms, including DS2001). If the Knightsbridge doctor told you you passed your medical, then you are likely all set. But I'm not entirely certain of that part since I have read of there being a medical review board at the embassy (not sure if that's true)

2 - You can apply for a driver's license after you receive your EAD/AP card..or your Green Card if you won't be applying for EAD/AP. You can technically apply as a K1, but I believe that your license would expire when your K1 expires (after 90 days from POE). So you're better off waiting. You can checkout Connecticut's DMV site to determine proper documentation to bring. You'll have to do the written and driving test before getting a US license. You're legally allowed to drive on your UK license for usually 90 days after moving to the US.

Good luck with the rest of your process. Dealing with K1 for a year has got to be a bit stressful. Sounds like you're near the end of the process now, though!

You can call DOS to check the status. Confirm receipt of Packet 3 forms/check if an interview date has been set.

I read on another VJ thread that to call from England, the # is: 011 1 202-485-7600 (Country code +1 + original number)

You're best bet is to have the USC call...this will cut down on the cost of the call and be easier since DOS is stateside with hours to match.

There is a thread about Waiting for the London interview you might want to read and look at the progress and add yours. It's in the UK forum http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/454779-who-is-waiting-for-an-interview-date/

There isn't a medical review board at the embassy. They contract Knightsbridge to make medical decisions about your eligibility. If they sent your results, then they must have been satisfied with your GP's letter.

Driving: each state is a bit different, but all require proof of your legal status in the US and won't give a license that is valid past what US immigration allows you. As a K1, it is the I-94 that proves your status. You get it the day you enter the US. it is generated automatically. You will have 90 days entry on it. Your visa expiration doesn't count because you visa is void as soon as you use it. Some states won't bother giving a license for only 90 days. Your next proof of having longer status in the US will be your EAD work authorization good for one year. Most can get a one year license using that. The next step up proof of status in the US is good for two years...the greencard. You will have to do all the requirements/tests as a brand new driver. You don't get any breaks for having a UK license. Canadians and Germans have reciprocal agreements with the states. Perhaps France too, but not the UK. My husband drove as a visitor on his UK license until he got EAD.

From a UK landline 001 202-485-7600. From a mobile it may be different.

The county code to call US is 001

The country code to call UK is 011 so I don't think the number given earlier will work

Thanks (as always), Nich-Nick. I was trying to piece together posts I've read over the last several weeks, and I obviously had a few things mixed up. Very much appreciated to have all the correct info in one place! smile.png

Also interesting that Germany has a reciprocal driving agreement, but not the UK!

Also interesting that Germany has a reciprocal driving agreement, but not the UK!

I have a PDF of a booklet some auto association put together after surveying each state.

Do you allow foreign drivers?

Do you require foreign license to be surrendered?

How long can visitors drive?

And many, many more such questions.

I remember Germany always being listed as not having to take a new test. Interesting. What kind of treaty did Germany do with every single state? This is what Texas (as an example) says on the TX driver license website:

"Adults (18 and Older)

Individuals who hold a valid, unexpired driver license from another U.S. state or U.S. territory, or from Canada, France, South Korea or Germany (the countries Texas has license reciprocity agreements with), do not have to take the knowledge or driving tests."

How long in advance did you get to know about your appointment date and time? I have seen differing time frames and you guys in here will know best for the London Consulate. i have had my medical and am excitedly awaiting the interview. We have one suggestion that the Interview is 4 weeks from receiving our packet 3 back at the consulate. That would be a wait of 2 more weeks if true. My baby is just as excited but we just want a guide to help us through the wait times ... Thank you Janie x
