Can't Get An Illinois Driving License

I haven't gone back since I went there to apply for a state ID. The people at the DMV location I went to told me the same story - that I need a visa that is valid for 6 months in order for them to issue a state ID or driver's license. I've decided to wait for my EAD before I apply again.

thanks, i got mine driving permit from the same office without any issue.

My husband just tried to get a state ID and brought in all the documents listed on the DMV website. He was told the same thing: Your I94/visa have expired, so you have to wait for your green card. (They didn't say anything about being able to come back when he gets his EAD.)

I was able to add him to my credit union account with just the passport and SS card, but we tried to take a out a small loan with his as a co-signer (just to establish credit for him in the US) and they said he could not do that without a state ID. Luckily we don't actually need the loan, I guess.

Just reading through this topic, and the advice I'd give to any of you who find yourself settling in Illinois, is find the remotest, most rural office you can. I'd suggest Southern Illinois (which, believe me, is a different WORLD, let alone state, in comparison to central IL & Cook County) where there are more bumpkins than you can shake a stick at. I got mine with a passport & SSN card.

And whoever said the local cops simply can't be bothered with all things remotely alien to them? Spot on.

Hi!! What office did you go to get your DL?

Thanks a lot!
