Of course I saw a thread about AP and I never really read anything about that and now it worries me. Does this happen often here and why does it even happen? I'm far from my interview but I can't help but worry about these things.

Very rarely. May happen if the Canadian is not a citizen or if they are originally from a country that routinely goes into AP (like Pakistan or a MENA country.) Or if their family goes fits into one of those slots. Also will happen if they work in a field that could be considered a threat to national security (such as bio-chemistry.)

I'm a Canadian and married an American. We went into AP on July 18th, 2013 for needing more information to prove domicile. My spouse lives in Canada on a temporary work visa. I saw a change in our status today to "Issued". That would mean we have been in AP for just over 5 weeks. Frustrating, but can happen! Read the domicile topic for Montreal on here, I wish I saw it before my interview. We even had an immigration lawyer. Both of us are caucasian, born in Canada & US respectively, no history of any T countries in the family or common names. It can happen if you are missing documents.

What does AP mean?

In this case it refers to 'Administrative Processing". It is also used as "Advanced Parole" so you will find it in both places and its definition will be determined by context.

Here is a link to the various acronyms used on Visa Journey:

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

What type of things are used to prove domicile? I don't know anything about that. Is that only because he lives there on a temp visa? I don't understand your situation entirely. She will interview in Vancouver, not Montreal if that makes any bit of difference.

Your fiance lives in the USA right? Then you shouldn't have any trouble.

Generally domicile issues only come up in spousal visas when the spouses live together abroad. (like both in Canada)

Yes, that's right. Because he was not living in the US but in Canada with me on a work visa, we needed to prove intention to move back to the states, "proof of domicile".

We originally submitted-US bank accounts, US tax return for my husband, letter from his parents stating our intention to reside with them upon immigration and an agreement from my exhusband allowing my daughter to immigrate with us. We verbally told the officer we had sold our house and business. This was NOT sufficient.

The CO felt that a lease agreement or formal job offer would complete our application. We then sent in a lease agreement for a residence in the US, a school application form for my daughter and a moving quote.

I am still waiting to have the passport in my hands before I breathe a sigh of relief. We did ask our Senator to check status on the day the CEAC website changed to "issued".

I would not even call this AP.

I would call this, you needed more evidence.

Well, technically it was AP. We were given a 221g refusal with further proof required. Then our status changed to "Administrative Processing" online and when I called to check. No one could give us any estimation of date that our visas would be processed. I got the standard answer that they are in administrative processing and there is no way to tell.

But, Mean Lady, I do agree it is not like the AP others experience for background checks, etc. I actually could find very little recent info on timelines for people in AP like myself so I decided to post. :-)

Happens sometimes. I was in AP (I am the Canadian) after I was told our K1 petition was approved at the Montreal consulate. I knew only because I called after the interview to get an update. I was apparently in for couple days. If I hadn't called I never would have known. DH and I have no criminal records, medical was 100% clear, our documentation was complete. I was born and raised in Canada. I do not have the type of background that seems to usually triggers AP. There was no "reason" for me to be in AP. Perhaps my name had to be double checked in some database for some reason. Who knows.

So unless you are/have been linked to suspicious people or are from a country who is not on a friendly terms with the US, AP won't cause you any issues.

My wife had the same thing happen with her case we got a 221g refusal with further proof required on june 27th 2013 at her interview. They asked for a bank statement for proof of support as my US tax return did not work cause i have lived in canada as a PR for the last 4 years. I asked the officer at the interview what was the fastest way to get this done he stated if we left passport there and emailed them the documents they wanted they would have it done right away. On june 28th i emailed them documents requested and got reply back july 10th (Thank you for your email, the consular officer will review the documents that you have sent) her case as well says administrative processing online and i called and was told you just have to wait they do not know any time frame.I sent montreal email yesterday to see why the hold up is. Hope its not much longer

Domicile is an important issue in Montreal. They're a little more strict than other consulates for this. Hopefully you'll get your visa soon.
