Me, I was a dumb@ss. I chose parents that never finished high school, made a career of the military because there was nothing he was better qualified for, and had 8 children on a family ranch iin west Texas that barely made enough money along with an E-7 retirement to get by. We drove an hour to Dyess AFB to get haircuts and groceries at the Commisary because we could not afford to pay the normal prices for such things. We ent there to get our teeth fixed and see a doctor.

We worked hard and got dirty and sweaty and it was a difficult life. I had a lot of broken bones before I was college age. My parents could not afford college for anyone, but we ALL went. Because we were told we COULD. You CAN, if you want.

Of the 8 children, 5 boys, 3 girls...3 of the boys became Physicians...a cardiologist (retired now) an Ortho Surgeon and a Family Practitioner. Two were engineers, Mechanical (me) and Electrical (my brother) We all found ways to pay or earn our own college tuition. The three girls? A BSN nurse, a teacher and a magazine editor.

No one stayed in the dirty, hot, difficult ranching business but I have every respect for people that do...believe me.

My father passed away without seeing one of his sons serve the medical needs of thousands of Africans in the "Dr.s Without Borders" program or of me building a new facility in Odessa, Ukraine to serve something like 170 million people's shipping needs, or my brother working for a hospital in England...from where my father's father had come with barely two nickles to rub together in 1912. But he always knew we COULD. He always told us we COULD.

In three generations our family went from "You CAN go to college and have a better life if you want...I wish I had" to "You WILL go to college and get a masters degree because you CAN" 3 of my 4 children have masters degrees, one is working on a doctorate and the other has just started with a plan for a MS in Mathmatics. He will get it.

Now of course will come personal insults from racists, brainless people who think I expect too much of people or believe in people and who want black people to just stay where they are because they "can't choose a better life"

There are things that are in your control and can be influenced by positive thought and those that aren't and can't. Perhaps you are one of those that believe that cancer survivers are those who believe they will get better rather than those who's particular metabolism and clinical circumstances allow for that outcome?

Are you a devotee of 'The Secret' perchance? No one is saying that it is not a good idea to want the best for yourself, to want a positive outcome, to have a positive outlook, but to believe that's enough regardless of external circumstances is naive and simplistic and leads to these inane conclusions that those who don't succeed simply didn't try hard enough.

From what I can see, Mr West is basically suggesting that all you have to do is present yourself as 'respectable' and you will never experience prejudice, so that if you do experience prejudice you clearly did something to deserve it. Nice.
