My fiance and I have received our 1st and 2nd NOA (Notice of Action) and my fiance has just received her letter and checklist from the Embassy in Guayaquil Ecuador. I am a US citizen and we are going through the K-1 visa process so she can move to the US to marry.

The problem is my fiance has found out she will have to travel out of country (Peru) to attend mandatory training for her job; at about the same time she will be scheduling her interview to change her visa from a tourist to a K-1.

She has not informed her employer about her future resignation for obvious reasons, so this presents a problem in timing. She must have her passport to travel at roughly the time we expect her interview to take place. Our understanding is they will take her passport for up to 2 weeks in order to update the US visa to K-1 before mailing it back to her.

So, our question is how long can we wait to move forward with the last steps in the K-1 process (turn in paperwork, get physical and request interview appointment)?

I have not been able to find a time restriction for this part of the process.

Thanks,

Aron

I believe that once the NVC forwards the petition to the embassy the beneficiary has 4 months to get the visa and then another 6 months before it expires.

I'd do the following:

Attend the medical, good for a year.

Submit the visa forms and schedule the interview but requiest a later date.

That being said....why bother with the training since the plan is for her to quit and move?

Thanks southernman, do you remember where you saw the 4 month lead time info? I would like to find it in writing if I can.

Good idea on scheduling the interview, thank you baron555.

Since my fiancee's employer does not know she will be quiting, she is not going to give notice until she has her updated K-1 visa in hand. Turning down the training would raise a red flag for her at work. Plus this training will be beneficial to her job search once here in the US.
