Hi,

My mother is a naturalised US citizen and applied for my and my sister's residency via I-130 for unmarried son/daughter over 21 in September 2011, and it's still in the Initial Review stage. Is this normal?

Also, regarding changes of address, my mother's, in the US, has remained the same. However I've moved about a bit here (in the UK). Should I call USCIS to inform them of my change of address or is only her's relevant?

Is it realistic to expect to wait over three years, until somewhere in 2015, to hear back from them?

Thanks!

Hi,

you can change your address when the second part of the process starts at the nvc (National Visa Center) stage. the wait currently is around 7 years or more, so it's normal. it may take months or it may take years for approval, but everyone has to wait until the priority date becomes current and there is a visa available. the approval should come before that, hopefully

for now, they will communicate with your mother.

U and ur sibling are over 21 so u are in F1 category and yes you have to wait. The waiting time was 5 years but in 2010 it was pushed to 7 years due to back log caused by visa availability... Yes it is realistic that your wait will be more than three years... Read about filing in the F1 category on the USCIS website..

Ah, I was unaware of that, thanks.

So there are two stages, Review-Acceptance and being assigned a visa? It is this second stage that could take a few years longer?

Also, where do I find my priority date? It doesn't seem to be available on the USCIS website (loggin in to check case status).

hi,

the priority date will be on the approved i130, it is usually around the date that immigration received the i130, you can read the guides to understand the process.

once the i130 is approved, it will be sent to the nvc, where it will filed until your priority date becomes current. at the nvc stage your mother will need to file more forms, payments and documents until the file is complete and sent to your country. then you will wait a few more months until they assign you an interview date.

this is the bulletin for the month of August, once your i130 has been approved, you will need to check every month to see what dates is immigration working on. your categories are F1, unmarried children of 21 of a USC

Thanks. If only she'd filed before naturalising...
