Change of address on IDs/ driver license are important?

So i am on B1 and we've applied for a Adjustment of status, my partner moved in with me. He added his name on the lease but he hasn't changed his address on any official papers, like id etc. The copies of his pay stubs that we sent with i864 also has his old address, which i'm little worried about. Firstly i didn't think it's gonna be an issue because most people don't change their address everytime they move, and it is understandable, like my brother must have moved 4-5 times since last 7 years and he still has the same address on his id. And secondly our lease is gonna expire in three months and we might move before i receive my green card, so, maybe there's no point in changing the address now.

What do you guys say? should he change it? We just sent our papers few days back.

Changing the address on your state ID is usually a state law, and therefore not optional.

This is certainly the case in Texas.

I think this varies both by state to state, as well as by IO. Here, it is required to change your address, but not by changing the whole ID/DL. You simply report it either as a person at DMV, so they change your address at their computer, or via online (can create an account). In terms of the IO, our IO saw both of our licenses that had totally different address (but were the change of address has been reported previously via online) and she did not even ask why we have separate address on our driver's licenses. Both of our license expires by only 2015 and we have no intention of changing the whole plastic card just to have the same address on it while DMV already have our address. And by 2015 we both are going to be US citizens too. So, I guess each system is different in each state, hence the IOs are different too about that.

Most states require that you inform them of your new address within typically 30 days of the move or you are in violation of state law. The USCIS requires the immigrant LPR to notify them within 10 days of each move. The USC sponsor must notify the USCIS of their address change as well until the I-864 is no longer valid. The FAA, SSA, FCC (if you have a radio license) and other government agencies have different requirements and consequences of not notifying them of an address change. You partner is lazy and it may cost you when it comes time to show that the relationship is bona fide. Also I would say that most people do change their address when they move.

Good luck,

Dave

^ My partner is not lazy, we didn't think it was important to change our address on every card specially when we're moving out in 2 months. You don't have to be rude.

I was surprised by that rude comment as well, so I guess I'm not the only one who thinks that was totally unnecessary. I think if you are moving in two months just report it to DMV without changing your card. Like I mentioned that is what we did, and we did not move in two months...indeed, we're still in the same place. Got approved on the spot, without any question on why our DLs have different addresses on them. Maybe USCIS has access to DMV records, hence they saw we have changed to the same address? I am not sure. But again, each state is different with their laws...and each IO is different for that manner. Good luck!

DMV- department of motor vehicles

i would recommend changing the address and getting a new card! just to be on the safe side! you wanna dot all your 'i' and cross all your 't'. good luck!

i have read threads where IO tell the citizen by having a different address on DL and different address on form< he is in a federal building lying, because it is required for u to update ur address within 30 days of moving!
