Yes. Any legitimate employer wouldn't let you start work, because you would not have the required documents to fill in an I-9. Working under the table is illegal.

Whatever you do, do NOT claim to be a US citizen on an I-9 (or in any other situation) as it leads to a lifetime bar from the US with no possibility of waiver.

Depending on circumstances, you may be able to apply through your international student office for some form of work authorization. This page has a reasonable summary of the options: http://www.isso.cornell.edu/immigration/f1/F-1work.pdf

I agree with the above: it's illegal and you won't have the required documents.

You are liable to have your status immediately terminated and/or have significant problems coming or staying in the US in the future.

Hi Everyone. I have a question, I am an International Student and I got a SSN, and the card shows ¨valid for work with DHS Authorizaion¨ but I dont have that authorization. If I work off campus, May I have problem with my Status?

Thank You.

It's a violation of your student F-1 visa to work without authorialzation. So, working off campus mean you can lose your student visa.

Yes, You can work off campus but you DSO has to make a approve it on your I-20. It's called CPT - curricula practical training. Thats the authorization you need. The job has to be related to your major hence the curricula part. It's not as easy like that though. When I did it, I had to work with my school's career center, register for a college credit program, turn in weekly time sheets to the school and receive a S/U grade each semester. I also had to get approval from the DSO each semester.

Talk to your school's international advisor. I'm not sure if all schools are approved for CPT.
