Hello all,

I will explain my situation first and hopefully someone knows something or has some advice.

I am a US citizen and married a foreigner last year. Filed AOS and were approved with GC in hand about two months ago. I work 4 very part time jobs, very little hours. I am applying to full time positions as a special education teacher in a high school, that is what I have my degree in. Some months my income combined is about 1300, and others its only about 900. In June one of my jobs will be over, and I will only be making $ 600 a month, and come July it will be much less as school is out.

I have about 5000 in my checking and savings combined. My husband however has about 8000. His name is on both my accounts and my name is on his. He does not work though only once in awhile privately for cash as a contractor.

Our rent is 800 a month. We pay for cooking gas and electric. Of course we have other bills as well.

I applied for SNAP or the food stamps program for Illinois about a week ago and I am hopefully to receive Atleast some temporary assistance for food. I know because of his conditional resident status my huaband is unable to receive anything.

However, should I be able to receive Atleast some? I have read into it and I've heard and read that they check checking and savings accounts and it seems they wouldn't give me anything since my name is on his savings as well?

I find it hard to believe that a US citizen like myself who has graduated college and is just in a little bit of a financial problem for the next few months won't be able to get assistance temporarily?

Please if you have any suggestions, advice,or knowledge on the topic please feel free to reply.

PS. I realize most people are thinking well why don't you get a full time job? I am waiting to see if i could get a full time position in the fall for school as a teacher as i have applied to many positions however schools confirm any positions right before the start of school. And it will be even more difficult to find a normal full time job such short notice and only keep it for a month or two.

Thanks!

perhaps consider applying for different jobs

i mean it will not hurt u right? waiting for few months to get a full time job i think it's time wasting.

also per I-864 you cannot apply for any means tested esp.w/your husband. you might end paying it.

i'm not 100% good and immigration rules or law. but i will probably think twice before applying for food stamps.

goodluck and god bless u

From my understanding the OP is the USC and she will be eligible for the assistance, beneficiary cannot apply and in her case I believe her husband is the beneficiary, she is not apply for her husband.

i understand that part. but his part of the household so means he'll be counted. there's no way you could apply any government assistant without telling them who leave in your household...obviously ALL income of the household need to be counted and the family size.

she need to provide the name, sss #, green card, id and etc of ALL the person leaving with her. including her husband and her child/s..that way they know if she qualified and how much food stamp they will approved her.

Thank you all so much for the replies. Yes that is correct I made sure to mark that only I am applying for benefits. I do have the right to apply on my own even though I am married. However the financial aspect is what I question. I am the one in the marriage who pays for food and house supplies. The only reason we are on each others accounts is because of in the future when we apply for him to get his permanent residency and greencard, us is will want to see proof of on going marriage so multiple bills and purchases in both our names etc. I believe that is true..m?

This I understand as well. I did include him in my household size as it is only my husband and I right now. However on the application there was one spot to mark who is applying and who is not. And another spot for SSNs of individuals who are applying only. Therefore I marked only I am asking for benefits and gave only my SSN
