EI Questions

Hi everyone, I've been researching on EI and here's my situation. I"m a Canadian citizen and I know I qualify for EI but I'm not too sure about my husband who is a USC. He's been here in Canada since Oct 2011 as a Canadian Permanent Residence and have been working fulltime since then. We will be moving to Florida in a few months, once we get our interview date and get approved.

I'm curious to know if anyone has any idea whether my hubby is eligible for EI while we are in Florida and looking for a job. I tried called EI today and the guy I spoke with was so rude to me and told me that EI does not apply to anyone leaving Canada and moving to the US. He even went as far to say "I've been working here for years and have never heard that Canadians moving out of the country are eligible for EI". Pretty much a big "eff you" to me over the phone. I was shocked.

Also, is EI considered social assistance? As a sponsor for my husband's CPR, I am financially responsible for him for 3 years, so if EI is social assistance, then I know he can't apply for EI.

I work M-F 9-5 and that makes it incredibly hard to call in with their ridiculous wait times.

There is a section in that link on how to apply for Canadian EI living in the US. There is a special number (I think in Kingston) to call with questions.

Thanks, I've already found that site before asking on here, I'm just concerned about my Canadian PR husband and whether EI applies to him.

For anyone else that may be in the same position as my hubby, Canadian PRs who are currently working and paying into EI are eligible. I was able to speak to someone after a ridiculously long wait. Just will need to apply via the "interstate" method.

YES--but one can NOT quite to far in advance...and one stil has to have enough qualifying hours. Huge forum at the top. Cr-1/Ir-1 are elgible right away...k1 not until they get their EAD---but one stil has to apply right away when you cross into the USA and get everything endorsed (activated)

The reason you can apply for EI is because of why you are moving, you're relocating for family. It's not like you just PFFT and quit.
