A new Pew Hispanic Center study released Thursday showed that more than half of Latinos now support gay marriage than oppose it (52-34 percent). To underscore how dramatic a shift that is, consider that in 2006 -- just six years ago -- the number was essentially reversed, with 56 percent opposing same-sex marriage and 31 percent supporting it.

The shifting attitudes on same-sex marriage in the Latino community mirror those of the nation as a whole. A May Gallup poll showed that half of Americans support same-sex marriage when just six years ago, almost six in ten opposed it.

...

But on the whole, the shifting attitudes on gay marriage -- combined with the fact that fewer Latinos actually vote on social issues -- signal that these type political appeals will resonate among a smaller segment of the Latino community in the coming years.

I'm amongst that number, and proud to be the niece of a gay Hispanic man who has been in a committed relationship with his German-American partner for over 30 years. Of course they have no realistic chance of being able to marry any time soon, since they live in Texas.

I'm no mathematical genius, but isn't "half" and "almost six in ten" pretty much the same thing?

I don't have the actual numbers but a 6-9% movement in any poll is considered significant.

I'm sure the word "half" in that statement was used to avoid the actual numbers. If there was any significant movement, the numbers would have been there.

Here's the poll linked in the quote. It actually shows a decline in the approval numbers from the previous year.

Half of Americans Support Legal Gay Marriage

Democrats and independents in favor; Republicans opposed

by Frank NewportPRINCETON, NJ -- Fifty percent of Americans believe same-sex marriages should be recognized by law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages -- down slightly from 53% last year, but marking only the second time in Gallup's history of tracking this question that at least half of Americans have supported legal same-sex marriage. Forty-eight percent say such marriages should not be legal.

Looks like we both got off the couch at the same time.

Given that this question has been polled regularly for such a long period of time, it is more meaningful to examine long term trendlines and not year-to-year movements. JMHO.

I don't know about you but I'm exhausted. Time to go take a nap.

I agree that long term trendlines are more meaningful. I just get very leary when people choose to use words rather than numbers, usually means they're trying to hide something.

Now, let's get a beer, I'm beat. It is Friday after all.

Or it means they think their audience prefers numbers.

I present numbers to the development community and the first line of management. I change the numbers to descriptive language when the same information gets sent to higher levels of management.

In fact, one of our monitoring tools has a separate "executive" view - just a traffic light with three colors for the oh so busy C-level types. For the rest of us, there's numbers and graphs and all kind of cool ways to dig in.

When something is being presented to the general public, such as poll results, numbers usually work better seeing that's what the poll is based on in the first place.
