I have been working in the US under a J-1 visa for years. My current visa/ds 2019 was validated in July 2012 and is good for two years. My husband (who is American)and I were married in October 2012, and are in the process of getting our paperwork together to apply for my permanent residency. My question is regarding my J-1 status and whether or not I am still able to work under it while waiting for my work authorization papers. I am assuming it will take approximately four months for my work papers to be validated. Am I able to continue working under my current J-1 status in the meantime? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Your VISA J1 allows you to work only for ONE employer, the one who sponsored your visa.

If you want to work for another employer, you will need to apply for a work authorization, i-765. it cost about $400.

However, I'm not sure if you can keep working for the employer sponsoring your visa J1... By filling the i-485, you will legally adjust your status so I'm not sure if you will still be able to work under your J1.

Applying for the i-765 will definitely make that posible.

I'm actually in the same case, so any answer would be helpful.

I don't know the answer to your question but once you file for the EAD (temporary work authorization = I-765) with your AOS, it will take about 2-3 months for it to be approved.

Hopefully someone will answer your question soon.:)

You can continue to work under the current J1 status until that status expires, as long as you don't violate any conditions of the J1 (e.g. working for another employer). Once you get your EAD you and work without restrictions.

This is correct. As an aside, be aware that you shouldn't leave the US after filing for adjustment of status until either your advance parole application (I-131) has been approved, or the whole adjustment of status has been approved.
