One way airline tickets...

Hey everyone,

I'm popn' my forum cherry w/ this post. I know given my place in this visa process, this question is kinda putting the cart before the horse but nevertheless...why does one-way airline tickets cost more than round-trip ones? I was thinking about buying my wife and I roundtrip tickets from Atlanta to Santiago de Chile just to save money eventhough she'll only be flying on the 2nd leg of the trip and not the 1st.

Is this a good idea? What say ye?

You can buy r/t and only use the first leg if that happens to be cheaper than buying one-way. You cannot buy r/t and only use the second leg. They won't trasnport you "back" if have never gone to your destination.

However Labanah_y_Iyan, it IS ok to buy one R/T ATL-Santiago for yourself and a Santiago-ATL return for your wife.

Since you opened that drum Reinhard: how about the first and last legs of an airtrip? Example: ATL-CAK gets cheaper returns than ATL-CVG (despite of the fact that there is a connexion through CVG)--could one use ATL-CVG and CVG-ATL legs only for such a trip?

I don't think so. But you better check with the airline. I did on using the return leg of a r/t only and they said that it will not work.

I think you can call and surrender the first leg and still use the second leg. Call the airline. If you just don't show up for the first leg they will cancel the second leg.

I don't think that's an option either. I inquired along those lines before and was advised that it will not work. But yeah, call the airline to make sure.

I had a friend with tickets from Denver to Bangkok with a connection in San Fran. He took a job in San Fran and surrendered the DEN to SFO leg so he could fly out of SFO. It worked.

Both Brit Airways and Virgin said no when I enquired. You must use the first to use the second. You can abandon the second half, but not vice versa.
