Travel to China, tourist visa question

Does anyone know if I need to register my marriage with the Chinese authorities (at a local consulate or whatnot) to apply for a long term L visa or will my US marriage certificate be acceptable for that purpose?

you can certainly apply for, and GET, a longer duration with multiple entry, if you show a marriage certificate copy, and a chinese passport copy, with your wife's name in it.

example, a 2 year Multiple entry Visa with 60 day duration or 120 day durations, when showing proof of marriage to a PRC person, when submitting the Visa Application into a Chinese Consulate.

I not think 'to register something', as you've written it, here. Only to show, when applying for the visa.

if you use a Visa Service , fwiw, usually they know about the longer durations and the 2 year visa...

USUALLY. IMO, it's worth it to pay their fees, to get it.

I've used a company called CIBT for years. You can give them a call and they should be able to what your options are. If you use their service they will walk it through embassy for you; for a fee of course but I've them to be very helpful.
