CR1 Visa help

I live in Seoul, Korea and have just applied for the I-130 visa for my wife a month ago. We are waiting to see if it gets approved or not. We need some help and have gotten some mixed answer results. We are planning on leaving Korea in August, 2013 to go study for a year abroad (not in US). We will be gone for 11 months. I am just curious about getting her CR1 visa before leaving. Will she have any trouble coming back to USA when our studying is finished? We plan on applying for the I 131 Travel document but I heard we could still face some problems. We are trying to decide what to do. We don't know if we should pause the CR1 process and not go any further until after we are done studying. Would we have to start the process all over again with the I130 if we just never do the medical check until after returning from our study? Or, would our application stay valid for a year or more after staying idle that long? I am just scared if it doesn't stay valid, then I won't be able to apply for the I-130 DCF again in Seoul. It's because I wouldn't be a resident of Korea at that time as I am currently. I would have to apply from within the States and it could take up to a year rather than 3 months. Any advice is well appreciated.

Once your file is at the consulate you have up to one year to attend the interview etc. So you could delay the medical until closer to to when you are about to complete your studies. Pls someone correct me if I am wrong.

To correct the semantics, an I-130 is not a visa nor is it something that is applied for. There is also no such thing as "applying for the I-130 DCF."

An I-130 is a petition form that is filed by a US Citizen or US LPR on behalf of a foreign relative. DCF is the process of filing a petition at a USCIS field office located in another country (e.g. South Korea).
