Today my fiancé Emmanuel, went to pick up his passport with his visa at the messenger. They told him he needed to pay 165$ to get it! Am I confused or is there suppose to be a 165$ charge just to pick it up.? I don't remember them ever saying anything like that. I've emailed the embassy but have not received a response yet. Does any one know anything abt this?

That is a new processing fee as of February 1, 2012. It's on the USCIS website.

They are supposed to stamp his passport and give it to him, but they just won't send him his green card until he pays the $165 processing fee. Weird.

is this for every type of visa and in every country?

No just for immigration visas.

That's odd. He doesn't need to pay for it at Haiti Messenger to get his passport. O picked his passport up and then we paid the fee online. The fee doesn't have to be paid right away, just recommended to be done before he travels out of the country. Maybe there's a misunderstanding.

I just read this on www.uscis.gov/ImmigrantFee

"Children who enter the United States under either the Orphan or Hague adoption programs, Iraqi and Afghan special immigrants, returning residents (SB-1s), and those issued K visas are the only immigrant visa cases exempt from paying the new fee."

It may mean that K1 are exempt from paying the $165.

Whooaa, my fiance is getting ready to pick his passport and visa on Friday. What does he have to do now?? Also, my fiance turned in his papers for the visa on last Thursday. Can he pick it up earlier than the requested date...like tomorrow?

Emmanuel said that he can get his passport but that the messenger is telling people if they dont have a receipt for the 165$ that he cannot even get on the plane, this is really ticking me off. Not that i wont pay it, it's just obviously i can pay it before he gets his green card but why does he need the receipt just to get on the plane!?

Oh and they day they told him his passport would be ready, it wasnt. Its just one of those weeks i guess....

Have him call first. They probably have it by now.

But, as confirmed by USCIS, do NOT pay the immigrant fee as K1 is a non-immigrant visa. The AOS process will be costly enough...

The number should be on the receipt, but here it is just in case---HM: 29409444
