Airline Ticket Question

Not sure if this is supposed to go here exactly. Sorry if it's not. My husband has been approved to move to the US on a spousal visa, so he'll need to order a ticket soon. After looking around, we discovered round trip tickets are cheaper than one way flights. Will he get into trouble by immigration or the airline if he buys a round trip ticket, and then simply doesn't use the return portion? I was also wondering if anyone knows about the procedure once he reaches customs in the US? Do they make a big deal out of someone immigrating here, or do they just sort of send you on your way? He won't get in trouble, what he can do is call the airline company after his arrival and just let them know he won't go on the flight back.

Yes there is a procedure once he gets here, the customs will go through his paperwork, stamp his visa etc. Some airports are easier than others, some are busier than others. Read some of the reviews here on VJ about different experiences at different airports.

No problems at all. Yes round trip tickets are way cheaper. Tell him to buy a ticket he might find useful in a later date even after 6+ months.. !

The only potential problem will be the airline. While not illegal, it is against the contract of carriage of most airlines to purchase RT airfare for the purpose of obtaining a cheaper fair than a one-way ticket.

However, this would only be an issue if it was tracked by the airline - frequent fliers doing this on a routine basis have had problems in the past. For a one-off, I would worry about it at all. To be safe, call the airline prior to departure of the return flight and cancel that portion of the ticket.
