One Way Ticket

My fiance has purchased a 1 way ticket to Buffalo where he will make his way across the Rainbow Bridge to the Canadian side where I will be waiting to pick him up. He will spend two days here with me and my family, then we will pack up the rental truck and drive to VA. What kind of hassle can he expect at the border with no return ticket? He is afraid if he tells them that he is coming to get me and we are driving back together that they might hassle him more? Anyone have any experience with this? I told him I would scan in my passport and anything I get from the Consulate so he can show them when crossing, is that going to be enough? Or should he get a letter from work saying he is expected back to work the following week?

So he says " Im going to get my fiance and BRING HER HOME!!!!" He'll have copies of all of the immigration documentation right?

Truth Truth Truth .........no harm in the truth!!!!!

I just got really excited thinking about the idea of packing the moving truck and going home. Even though we're lucky not to have to do that . One of the bennies of military life is they'll pack and move ya.....wooo hooooo.

My then fiance flew to Detroit, picked up a rental van in Detroit and drove across the border at Windsor to pick me, my cats and some of my belongings up to bring us back to the US when I activated my K-1. At the border, Canadian Immigration asked him where he was going and he replied" I am going to Chatham to pick up my fiancee. She is then driving back with me to Georgia on her K-1 visa and we are going to get married". The border guard broke into a big smile, waved my now husband through and said "Go on brother, go on! Far be it from me to stand in the way of another man's misery!". So, I don't think your fiance will have any trouble - just explain exactly what he is doing. He should be fine.

Thanks Kathryn I did tell him to say he was coming to get me to drive back he is just wondering if he would get hassled but the truth is always the best. I said to him worst case you head back to the Buffalo airport or a train station and get a ticket from Toronto to Buffalo.

We had originally thought about renting a truck in Buffalo and bringing it up here to load as in Canada I will have to use U-Haul (ugh), but when I called around the rental companies said they didn't know if it would be ok to bring it across the border, so I just went ahead and did the U-Haul thing, cross your fingers for me lol.

So he is walking across... what kind of return ticket could he possibly have? A walking ticket? Certainly won't be guilty of speeding.... :D

The reason we rented the van in Michigan is that we could find no local rental company who would allow us to do a one way trip from Canada to US. If you are planning on returning it in the US, you might want to verify that you can do that and are not expected to return it to Canada.

We did check with the company and they had no problems with it crossing the border into Canada - they provided my husband with a form he could use to verify their permission,

 What you've posted (red) sounds like it's a domestic trip inside US for him--why would the airticket even need to be shown to a (Canuck) border official AFTER its endpoint?

Also, even if shown to USCBP official, it has no meaning if he's the USC.

That's what I was thinking... if he's driving why would he even have to have a discussion about the flight part? but anyway, good luck!

He won't be driving across he will get a cab to the border, and then walk across, which is why I thought they might question him.

AH! I see. Hmmm, I never thought about walking over. Wonder how many people do that every day. ;)

It appears now that the one-way domestic airticket (that you mentioned in the initial post) is totally outside the glister of the thread. The only question here is "will the Canuck border guards question him if he walks across?".

You can walk across the Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls. It's a tourist area ... no trucks. The Peace Bridge is in Buffalo ... it's a commercial crossing, lots of trucks.

I don't know how a pedestrian would clear Canadian customs, though. It would seem odd he didn't have a car parked someplace, wouldn't it?

I guess it may raise some eyebrows. I crossed over at Niagara. We got asked nothing....I mean nothing when we entered into the Canadian side. She looked at my id, my friends id and said have a good day....that was it. We got grilled supremely when we walked back over to the American side. It was my most fearful border crossing that's for sure. But thats a whole other story. On the American side they did ask why we walked over etc and where our car was. It was parked on the American side in their parking area.

When I travel from the Buffalo airport myself I guess I travel via the Peace Bridge (I can never keep the bridge names straight!). I was sure I couldn't remember a sidewalk.
