Questions on DS-156K

I have a couple questions regarding the Embassy Interview and the requirements of the DS-156K Application.

My fiance will be going through Guangzhou.

What are the Police Certificate requirements? Can anyone share a link to information about specifics on what's required? She lived in Iceland for 6 months and then Norway for another 8 months before returning to China. Will she need any documentation from Iceland or Norway?

Also, with regard to Evidence of Engagement, what kind of evidence are they looking for? I was planning to wait on a ring until she is in the United States. Beyond that, what would be considered evidence? We have already signed letters as to out intent. Just curious.

Thanks for your help!

Dave

She will need police checks from there, check Google. Letter of intent from you and her about how you met, etc. and plan to get married. The ring is not an issue, or you can get a simple plain band in the mean time. See my research.

Q. Do I need to provide a police certificate when applying for permanent residence?

A. Yes. Certificates are available to all citizens and residents or former residents who have an Icelandic identification number.

Q. How and where do I obtain one?

A. If you live in Iceland

If you are a citizen of Iceland, you should apply in person and pay the applicable fees at the following address:

Office of the Reykjavik Police

Reykjavik Police

Borgartun 7, 105

Reykjavik, Iceland

If you are a foreign resident, you should apply for a police certificate (Sakavottord) at the District Commissioner of Police (Syslumandur) in the town of your present or former residence.

If you live outside Iceland

You will have to give a written notarized authority to a representative in Iceland to request the certificate in person, on your behalf.

You should acquire police clearance in all the countries she lived in for at least six months AFTER the age of 16.<br style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Lora; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">

Welcome to the forum.

The 'Documentary Proof…Ongoing Relationship' section of the forums's step-by-step K-1 visa guide say it best as to the type of evidence that is best suited to show an ongoing relationship:

Thank you! I'm pretty well versed on the ongoing relationship information but just wasn't sure if the proof of engagement was something different they looked for.

Appreciate all the info!!!!! Much thanks!

i've not read of a 'evidence of engagement' being asked for at the interview .. People that have actually done that, do submit it - as it's a great pile of relationship evidence.

however, letters of intent, one on each of you - are supposed to be filed with the I-129F.

Miss that? get it in on interview day.

The US State Department website says, An applicant must obtain a police certificate from the local police authority: If you...lived in a different country for more than 12 months. She wasn't in any single country for more than 12 months but was gone in total for 14 months.

You think she's still required to get a certificate from both even though she wasn't in either for 12 months?

Haven't read or heard about from folks going through Guangzhou. I know it certainly wasn't on our radar screen, or asked of us when my wife had her interview in Guangzhou.

This is interesting. The following link http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_2994.html#6 says this:

Police certificates from your present country of residence and all countries where you have lived for 6 months or more since age 16 (Police certificates are also required for accompanying children age 16 or older)

This link http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3195.html#police says this:

An applicant must obtain a police certificate from the local police authority: IF you....lived in a different country for more than 12 months

Which one is correct?

:time: It helps everyone that uses the forum. and enables responders to formulate appropriate responses according to your visa journey.

The "2994" information is for nonimmigrant visa applications associated with an approved (I-129F) petition for an Alien Fiance(e) (K-1) to be processed at a US consulate.

The "3195" information is for an immigrant visa application associated with a (I-130) Petition for an Alien Relative (i.e., spouse) to be processed at the NVC.

It can get confusing, I found it best to stick to K-1 Visa requirements, it made it a lot simpler.

Good luck.

Following up from above response:

Another good rule of thumb to follow in this visa journey, is to follow the specific requirements of the interviewing consulate.

Here is the bilingual-version of the Packet 3 instruction letter (Form OF-169) from the Guangzhou consulate:

http://photos.state.gov/libraries/guangzhou/47024/IV/K%20Instruction%20-May2012.pdf

It and more information about the packets, required forms, can be accessed at the Guangzhou consulate website:

Thanks again for the responses A&B, I appreciate the help.

I had to restart my timeline since my original I-129F needed to be withdrawn. I'm actually getting ready to resubmit a new I-129F petition probably next week. That's why my timeline isn't updated.

Also, I know I'm a little ahead of myself but I was looking for clarification because Lulu was actually moving between Iceland, China and Norway over the course of a year and a half and I wanted to know how specific to be with the dates she was living in each place. For instance, she was in Iceland from 12/09 to 5/10, which looks like 6 months but it was actually 12/3/2009 to 5/2/2010 which is just five months. If the cutoff was 12 months I wouldn't worry about the specific dates on the I-129F.

Anyway, thank you again for your help.
