It takes her 13 hours by train to reach Moscow. So I will let her dicide: a few extra nights in Moscow or two trips. I know I don't want her to fly Since Russia has had 3 passenger jet crashes this year! (last time I heard a few months ago)

If YOU went to visit her today would you fly from Moscow or take the train?

I would be a hyprocrite and take the plane. I worry about her more than me...

On second thought I don't know. Three crashes make for a really bad record.

Of course 3 crashes is not a good thing, but out of how many tens of thousands of domestic flights? Sounds safer than taking a Russian taxi!

Exactly what I was thinking.

Avoiding a flight because of the threat of a crash is like avoiding the outdoors becauase of the threat of lightning. I know there are actual statistics on this, (that undoubtedly cost millions of dollars to compile at some university.... and probably on the taxpayer dollar) but you're something like 1,000,000 times more likely to die in a car crash on the way to the airport than on the actual flight itself.

But, I also understand that being scared to take a flight is not the same as being scared to do something else. It's one of those things that when it ends badly.... it ends REALLY badly! It's not like you fall 37,000 feet out of the sky and get a bruised shin. YOU'RE FREAKING DEAD!!!!

That said, like Neonred pointed out, there are many more things in Russia that are likely to kill you before a domestic flight. I recommend vodka!

lol You should try riding with her brother. He drives with one hand on the horn and he is the most reckless driver ever! Darting in and out, honking, passing while another vehicle is coming. I don't know how he didn'twreck. The worst thing about it was the seat belts were tucked into the seats so I counldn't put them on!

I did like the lane sharing/spliting that they do. It seems practical. The other day I tried to drive like a Russian here in the US and was given a warning.

The first time I was in Omsk (Siberia) I took a taxi with Galina. The guy drove like Mario Andretti's younger brother on crack. Me and Galina came to the conclusion that he was on some drugs. She was the one that told me. And I was thinking it as well. Also we took a cab in St. Petersburg and this guy was a total ###. Just driving like a maniac. I told him at the end of the cab ride that there is no reason to risk the life of others. If you want to drive stupid then do it with noone else in the car. He apologized. I'll stick to flying and feeling safer in a Russian plane than being in a taxi.

16/10/2006- Interview date- I'm nervous and my fiance is cool calm and collective. And she's the one that has to do the interview.

Stay away from ambulances too.

While in Moscow, an ambulance passed us and the medics(?) were hanging out the windows singing above the blaring rock music. Usually, sober people don't do stuff like this. But, maybe it was just a really good song!
