Vermont is known for its liberal gun laws and low crime rate. But what may surprise you is the rate at which Vermont guns are illegally trafficking to our southern neighbors, fueling crime in states with stricter gun laws.

A national coalition called Mayors Against Illegal Guns, headed by Boston Mayor Tom Menino, examined how often guns purchased in one state were recovered from crime scenes in another state. Vermont ranked 16th nationally and topped every state in the Northeast, exporting more guns per capita than New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and New York.

"The reason to care is because we're all Americans and if we're doing something in one state that might cause harm to somebody in another state, then we need to address it," said Mayor Jon Mitchell, D-New Bedford, Mass.

State and federal authorities say black market guns leaving Vermont are typically traded for drugs, fueling property crimes and home break-ins across the state.

Jennifer Reading has an in-depth report tonight on the Channel 3 News at 6 p.m. as WCAX investigates guns and drugs in Vermont.
