Once the I-130 petition gets approved, how long do you have to complete the process? I know once the visa is issued you have six months to enter the country, but is there a similar time limitation for completing the rest of the visa steps after you get NOA2?

My husband needs to complete some research for his graduate studies abroad (not here, not in Canada), and with processing times taking so much longer, we're afraid that he'll have to depart for his research before we make it through the visa process. We're just trying to plan for different contingencies in case his research schedule takes him away from the embassy for several months...

The I-130 approval never "expires" but if you drag your feet at NVC for more than a year for each needed response, they'll send the file back to storage.

yup, so that's 2 years, if'n you keep in touch with NVC and send in the IV and AOS per YER calendar.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

So in other words, since his research will last somewhere between 3 and 12 months, it sounds like we can make things go as fast or as slow as we need them to once we hit NVC...whenever the heck that happens!

Thanks folks, that takes a little bit of the stress off. Life is completely uncertain after mid-May at this point through a combination of visa process and research funding issues!
