Question about Tax Rebates (GST, HST, etc)

Hey VJ, been awhile

I was advised while doing my taxes for 2011 that there was no issue in me accepting my rebates since I still lived in Ontario in 2012 (I POE'd in June of 2012.)

I've forgotten to contact the CRA though since the new year, and the two rebates were deposited into my CIBC account on January fourth.

2013 will be the first year in which I will not be living full time in Canada.

Where should I go from here? Who else do I have to contact?

Do you guys know how OHIP works now? I've heard that after six months of non-residency, you forfeit OHIP coverage.

Any input is great, thanks!

If you cashed your GST rebates after you POE, then you are not entitled to them. When I called to change my address, I got a letter stating that I owed for the 2 cheques I cashed. I knew I had to pay them back, but I would rather cash them and send a cheque in the mail as re-payment rather then send the GST cheques back and possibly get lost in the mail.

OHIP is forfeited when you POE as well. Many VJers get temporary insurance to cover them until they're under their spouse's coverage.

Okay, thanks guys. Pretty much what I figured.

I'll call up the CRA to change my address and deal with the rebates.

Do I have to call The Ministry of Health to change my address as well? (I assume this will automatically show me as a non-resident and thus not covered.) I'm covered by my husband's insurance already, so thankfully that's one less thing to worry about.

Yes, you are supposed to cancel your health care as well as you are no longer a resident. It was really simple calling BC health, not too sure about other provinces.

The CRA just sent me a GST/HST rebate check for $16.66 at my US address. They are NOT on the ball.

Seriously! I contacted them accordingly, after my POE in November, and gave my change of residency. They sent a letter my US address, stating I was 'NO longer eligible for rebates, because I'm no longer a Canadian resident. But then they send me a check? What the?

I'm going to mail it back, with a copy of the letter they sent.

CRA is not on the ball- I called them several times to ask them to halt my rebates but they kept on sending them. I didn't cash them, just sent them back with a letter explaining I was no longer eligible for them. They eventually sorted it out, it was a pain in the ####. You have to call the international tax office in Ottawa to update your status to non resident- the provincial lines won't do any good. My mistake was calling the provincial tax office asking them to update my status to non resident; I asked if this would prevent the GST rebates from being sent to me and they said "yes" but apparently not! Ugh.

Are there any penalties for not informing OHIP of your new address if you don't use your card? I haven't contacted them, just figured I'd let the card expire and not use it as per the law... Will I get fined or something?

I never canceled my OHIP either. I still have my red and white card though. I really hope there is no penalty! I never thought to cancel!

I never notified anyone either, i think i just did an online change of address somewhere..i think..LOL not sure Only way you'll find out if there is an issue is if you move back to Canada I would imagine.

One prob does not have to cancel it.......BUT in this day of Identity Fraud.....May be in ones best interest to do it.
