Hello all,

A friend of mine just called wondering what to do. he travelled to Nigeria and got married in November last month. He has since returned and now putting his paperwork together to file for his wife tomorrow. He was previously married and has copies of his divorce papers as part of the paperwork to send in. The challenge is that the White Marriage Certificate he was given in Ikoyi Marriage registry says " Bachelor" in that column. he wants to know if they should have speficied "divorcee" instead.

he does not want to start making attempts to get a new certificate issued if there is no need to considering that everyday that goes by could mean longer processing time.

Your thoughts, knowledge and experiences are appreciated.

If he was previously married he should have indicated it in d form he filled prior to d wedding. In the marriage certificate under CONDITION should state DIVORCE. My husband and I were previously married and in our marriage certicate it indicated DIVORCE under the CONDITION column. He shud take it back to the registry for correction. It's obviously an error unless he didn't indicate it on the form he filled .

Yes its too bad you didn't catch that at first. I know I raised such a scene over the "spinster" being entered because I never been married and they don't put single I guess unless thank God you are a parent (she is very grown) so they had to change it right there to Single parent.

So I suggest to them going down paying some money and getting it changed so it doesn't look like someone was trying to hide a material fact.

thanks Erin and Dwheels. Thats what i told him after i read Erin's post and he already started working on it. better he slows down now and get it right than be slowed down in future with questions.

This happened to my husband and i when we did ours too. Two days after while going through it my husband noticed the mistake and i took it to them for correction and was charged N8,000 at Ikeja Registry. Its better to get it corrected so u dont have any issues in the future.
